New TV shows

OK, so it's been over a month and a half since I finished the last meme and said I would try to post more often. Oops. Anyway, I thought I would ramble a little about two new shows this season that I've completely fallen for.

The first is Forever. The new userpic on this entry is from Forever - I got it from the lovely Kythe42 on AO3. For those who aren't familiar, Forever is basically a crime procedural in the vein of Castle, but with a paranormal twist: the main character, who is a medical examiner with New York City, is 235 years old. Henry Morgan - played by Ioan Gruffud - doesn't age, and when he dies, he reawakens naked in the nearest largest body of water, usually the East River given where he lives.

My favorite thing about the show is the relationship between Henry and Abe, played by Judd Hirsch, who is...[Spoiler here for the end of the pilot...]
Henry's son, adopted as a baby at the end of World War II after Henry and Abigail, the nurse who found Abe, fell in love and married. The "young" immortal father/old mortal son scenario has been done before, namely on New Amsterdam, but Ioan Gruffud and Judd Hirsch bring amazing nuances and chemistry to their dynamic that make it just delightful to watch. Beyond the procedural plot of each episode, there are ongoing threads about Abigail and what happened to her and about another immortal who has appeared in Henry's life and whose true motivations have yet to be completely determined. The always wonderful Lorraine Toussaint is also present as the lieutenant who supervises the homicide detectives Henry works with, Jo Martinez and Mike Hanson. Jo is perhaps a bit of a Kate Beckett clone, but Alana de la Garza makes her a warm and intelligent character. Overall the characters are likeable and engaging, the plots are generally reasonably entertaining, there is humor and emotion, and I just really like this show.

The other show I've more recently fallen for is Scorpion. It's about a team of "geniuses" who basically work on contract for the federal government solving crises, preventing terrorist attacks, things of that nature. What little I heard about this show at first didn't lead me to believe it was anything other than a typical sort of team-action-thriller type thing, but it's a little deeper than that. The real theme of the show is how so-called "geniuses" aren't always very good at social interaction or navigating everyday life, and how society doesn't always treat them very well, especially as children, some of which I can really relate to. The plots and the team's solutions border on comic book-levels of ridiculousness, but they do such a good job of creating suspense and making you emotionally engaged that you just don't care. My biggest complaint early in the season was that several times, it seemed like whatever problems the team was facing were caused or made worse by some mistake someone on the team made, which was a little frustrating, especially given that the whole premise of the show was that these people were supposed to be so *good* at what they did. But that's toned down a bit later in the season, and I realized that you could also look at it as character growth for these people who are used to thinking of themselves as so good at what they do. More racial diversity would be nice, as out of the 9 main regular or recurring characters, only one is non-white - Happy, a kick-ass Asian woman. I've also noticed that the latest episodes are getting maybe a bit...soap-operaish, or at least a little overly-focused on romantic relationships, with three different couples we're supposed to be rooting for. But overall I like the characters and their dynamics and enjoy this show a lot.

I'd love to hear if anyone else is watching either of these shows and what your thoughts are!
